The Nigerian senate has postponed the screening of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees to next week Tuesday and Wednesday.
The exercise held on Tuesday and Wednesday, culminating in the confirmation of all 18 nominees screened over the two days. It was expected to continue on Thursday, but it will now continue on Tuesday October 20 and end on Wednesday October 21.
Earlier on Thursday, it was confirmed that the screening of Rotimi Amaechi, which was delayed on Wednesday, will now hold next Tuesday.
The postponement of Amaechi’s screening and that of the outstanding candidates are two independent decisions.
Speaking with Channels TV on the postponement, Dino Melaye, a senator, said: “The leadership has decided that the screening exercise be postponed to Tuesday and Wednesday, because they want a holistic approach to the screening exercise and there is already a resolution that eight or nine would be taken on Tuesday and the rest would be taken on Wednesday.
“Basically, I would want to say I’m a member of that committee and the two petitions were actually examined, and both of them, resolutions reached, and that of Amina Ibrahim has been presented on the floor.
“That of Rotimi Amaechi is actually a one-line resolution because in compliance to our reponse to rules and regulation that any matter that is in court or that is undergoing judicial remedy cannot be presented or even looked into and that is our resolution, because the matter is still undergoing judicial remedy, we cannot look into it. Rotimi Ameachi has no problem.
“I have just confirmed now that the report would be ready and be presented on the floor on Tuesday because he is going to be screened on Tuesday. The essence of the report is to clear him for screening and it has been resolved that it should come on the same day.”
