Nnadozie among top three nominees for CAF women’s best player award

Chiamaka Nnadozie is a step closer to becoming the first goalkeeper to win CAF women's best player award

Chiamaka Nnadozie has been listed among the final three nominees for the 2024 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award.

The African football governing body announced the top echelon of candidates for the coveted award on Thursday.

Nnadozie is the only goalkeeper in contention for the award. Zambia’s Barbara Banda and Sanna Mssoudy of Morocco are the other names on the final list of nominees.

The award is set to have a different winner from Asisat Oshoala since 2018. The Super Falcons striker won the award six times — including the last three editions.

No goalkeeper has won the prize since its inception in 2001.

Nnadozie also made the top three final list for the goalkeeper of the year. The 24-year-old won the award in 2023.

The goalkeeper was brilliant for both club and country in 2024. Nnadozie was named goalkeeper of the season in the 2023/24 French women’s league as she aided Paris FC finished third on the log.

She represented Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The goalkeeper stood out for the Super Falcons despite losing all three games and crashing out in the group phase.

The award winner will be revealed on December 16 at the 2024 CAF Awards ceremony billed for the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco.

In the men’s category, Stanley Nwabali was not among the final nominees for the goalkeeper of the year award.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper was ousted from the list by the trio of Andre Onana, Ronwen Williams and Yahia Fofana.
