Occupants feared trapped as building collapses in Abuja

A two-storey residential building in the Kubwa area of the federal capital territory (FCT) has collapsed.

A section of the building was said to have caved in on Saturday morning.

Manzo Ezekiel, spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told TheCable that two persons were initially trapped under the rubble.

“One person has been rescued and the search and rescue efforts are still going on to search for the remaining person that is said to be under the rubble,” Ezekiel said.

“We hope that soon we’ll be done with the rescue operation.”

The development comes barely 24 hours after a two-storey school building, located in the Busa Buji community of Jos north LGA, collapsed while students and teachers were in classes for the third term examination.

So far, 22 people have been confirmed dead and 132 injured in the accident.

Musa Ashoms, Plateau commissioner for information and communication, said the school had a population of about 400, adding that the section that collapsed was accommodating 200 students.

The commissioner said the collapsed school building was built on a waterlogged area, which did not meet construction standards.
