Waheed Ayilara, Akwa Ibom police commissioner, is dead

Waheed Ayilara, commissioner of police in Akwa Ibom state, is dead.

Ayilara reportedly died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Thursday from prostate cancer complications.

In February 2024, Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police, deployed Ayilara to head the Akwa Ibom command of the force.

Ayilara served as acting commissioner of police in Lagos in November 2023, succeeding Idowu Owohunwa.

He earned a law degree (LL.B) from the University of Ibadan and masters of law (LLM) from the University of Lagos.

He was appointed into the police force as a cadet assistant superintendent of police on May 18, 1992 and has served in various capacities.

When contacted for confirmation, Timfon John, spokesperson of the Akwa Ibom police command, told TheCable that the police will only issue a statement on the demise after an official statement has been received from Ayilara’s family.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson of the Lagos police command, has however confirmed Ayilara’s passing to TheCable.
