Some women in Port Harcourt are currently staging a solidarity walk for the emergency rule in Rivers state.

Clad in white, and holding aloft placards with inscriptions like ‘prosecute the bombers of Rivers assembly, ‘state of emergency is constitutional’, the horde of women are also declaring support for Ibok-Ete Ibas, the sole administrator of Rivers.

The women are moving across major routes in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, while belting solidarity tunes and slogans.

On April 11, a group of women in Rivers protested the suspension of Siminalayi Fubara, the governor, and the declaration of emergency rule in the state by President Bola Tinubu.

During last Friday’s protest, the anti-emergency rule women implored prominent Nigerians, including former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, and Goodluck Jonathan, to intervene in the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers.

On March 18, Tinubu declared emergency rule in the oil-rich state, citing a protracted political crisis.

He also suspended Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu; and all members of the Rivers assembly for an initial period of six months.

The president immediately appointed Ibas, a retired naval chief, as the state’s sole administrator.
