Infantino is new FIFA president

Gianni Infantino has been elected the new president of FIFA after two rounds of voting in Zurich on Friday.

The Swiss, who is the secretary-general of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) , polled 115 votes to defeat Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa, president of Asian Football Confederation, who got 88 votes.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein from Jordan received four votes, while Jerome Champagne did not get any vote.

Infantino succeeds fellow Swiss, Sepp Blatter, who stepped down after a series of scandals in the world football governing body.

“I accept the result of this election, thank you,” Infantino said in his acceptance speech.

“I went through an exceptional journey, met many fantastic people who love football, who breathe football.

“I want to be the president of all of you, of all 209 nations

“I want to work with all of you to work together and build a new era where we can put football at the centre of the stage.”
