Rooney equals Bobby Charlton’s United goal record

Wayne Rooney has just joined Sir Bobby Charlton as the holders of Manchester United’s goalscoring record.

The Englishman equalled the feat in lucky fashion, after a Juan Mata miskick bounced off his knee in the 7th minute, following good work from Marcus Rashford, to give United the lead in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Reading.

The goal was Rooney’s 249th for Manchester United, and the much-maligned forward could have the record all to himself should he score again in the encounter, which still had 70 minutes to go as off the time of filing this report.

Anthony Martial doubled the scoreline in the 15th minute, slaloming pass a maze of Reading defenders before sliding the ball to the far left corner of the keeper’s goal post.

Reading is coached by Jaap Stam, a former Manchester United who helped the club to three consecutive league titles between 199 and 2001, when he was suddenly sold to Lazio by legendary coach Alex Ferguson.
