The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has called for an emergency meeting over the exclusion of its members in the increment of salaries and allowances for judicial officers in the country.

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu signed a bill seeking to increase the salaries and allowances of judges in the country by 300 percent into law.

The judicial office holders’ salaries and allowances bill, passed by the senate in June, will allow the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) to earn N64 million annually.

The president presented the bill to the national assembly in March.

Marwan Adamu, the national president of JUSON, said the association is “confused” about the news reports of salary increments for judicial officers.

Adamu said other judicial officers from the chief registrar downward are not included in the upward review of the salary.

“We want to commend President Tinubu for signing the bill into law,” NAN quoted the JUSUN president as saying.

“But we are confused because of what we are seeing in the news. What we saw is that the approval is for judicial officers.

“It means other staff from the office of the chief registrar downwards are not included, going by what they are saying.

“We have not seen the law yet. During the public hearing at the national assembly on the amendment of the bill, we were consulted by the house of representatives to make input.

“We presented our positions. We asked for a holistic review of the salary for all the staff.

“We have called for an emergency national executive council meeting for Saturday to deliberate and review the issues and other related matters with regards to the judiciary.”
