DSS prosecutes Dasuki over ‘illegal’ firearms

The Department of State Services (DSS) has taken Sambo Dasuki, immediate past national security adviser, to court for alleged possession of unlicensed firearms.

In a search of Dasuki’s residence in Abuja on July 16, the DSS had reportedly seized some firearms found in his possession as well as some vehicles.

This resulted in a standoff between soldiers guarding his residence and the DSS operatives, which did not end until the evening of the next day.

The DSS premised the search on Dasuki on intelligence that he was planning to commit “treasonable felony”. However, it has so far been unable to prove this.

In a statement made available to TheCable on Monday, the DSS, through its acting spokesman, said: “You may recall that on 16 July, 2015, the Department of State Services (DSS), carried out a search operation on properties belonging to the immediate past national security adviser, Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (Col/rtd), in Abuja and Sokoto.

“This action was necessitated by credible intelligence which linked him to acts capable of undermining national security. The search operation led to the recovery of large cache of arms and ammunition among other things and for which further investigation was conducted.

“Consequently, on Monday 24 August, 2015, he was charged to court based on evidence so far obtained, but which relates to possession of fire arms without license punishable under section 27(i)(a)(i) of the Firearms Act Cap F28 LFN 2004. This is in line with democratic practice and our avowed commitment to the rule of law, in which nobody is deemed to be above the law no matter how highly placed in the society. Accordingly, the general public will be duly informed as the matter progresses.

  1. What Nigerians need most now are jobs for the millions of jobless youths; safety and security and improvement in health care facilities and quality education and not all these chasing and hounding public officials of the past administration. Arresting and embarrassing them will not put three square meals on the tables of millions of hungry Nigerians.

    1. they will oppress and torment you with their I’ll gotten wealth and arms think straight, it a simultaneous operation, this must go along with providing jobs and meals for the millions you mentioned

    2. With which money will they use to provide you with three square meal when most of our funds have been stolen. The governors cannot pay salaries or contractors. Do you know why? No money! That is why they need to recover as much as possible from these looters.

  2. This case may not be that water tight, his house was searched not quite long after his dismissal. So the question is wouldn’t he have returned these firearms in due time? The issue of national security is also difficult to express, as it will never be easy for any single person to attack and subdue our current democratic structures. The charge for stealing and abuse of office would sound like a stronger charge. Remember you’re dealing with the ex-NSA, retired Army Colonel, Prince and well educated man. The probes and anti-corruption crusade has to be meaningful or else it becomes shadow chasing to the disillusionment of Nigerians.

  3. He deserves everything. He single handedly shifted elections in Nigeria, to him and his likes were ready for war. Not knowing that the CARD READER was waiting for them peacefully. Himself and his team wanted to put this country to shame and anarchy. So there is no mercy for the merciless at all.

  4. They are only chasing shadows leaving the substance. Is this the change promised. the economy is in ruin, naira is at an all time low, unemployment has gone beyond remedial level. Can somebody tell them to get on with the art of governance and leave this trial by press. We will live to see where it will end.
