Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged African countries to work towards better preparation on ensuring appropriate distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it is ready.
The WHO, in a statement on Thursday, described the proposed COVID-19 vaccine distribution exercise as “the continent’s largest ever immunisation drive”, adding that African countries need to better inform the people about the benefits of being protected against the coronavirus.
“Developing a safe and effective vaccine is just the first step in a successful rollout,” Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, was quoted as saying.
“If communities are not onboard and convinced that a vaccine will protect their health, we will make little headway. It’s critical that countries reach out to communities and hear their concerns and give them a voice in the process.”
