Ibrahim Husseini, Kaduna commissioner for environment and natural resources, says the state will plant 1.2 million trees in 2021 to tackle climate change.

Husseini said this on Friday while inaugurating a tree-planting campaign ahead of the 2021 World Environment Day in Kaduna.

According to him, adequate tree planting is needed to restore biodiversity — the variety of plant and animal species in the environment– and to tackle climate change because humans depend on trees for a sustainable environment.

Husseini urged the people of the state to desist from felling trees and to help save the environment by planting trees.

Lawal Jibrin, general manager, Kaduna Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA), said the agency will ensure proper nurturing of the trees planted.

He encouraged the people to always clear their drainage systems in order to prevent flowing, and urged them to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal.

Jibrin said the state has taken measures to address the issue of flooding by ensuring that the roads are constructed with standard drainage systems.
