The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kano state says a claim that President Bola Tinubu and Abba Yusuf, governor of the state, met to work out a deal is false.

There were rumours that the president was asked to ensure that Yusuf remained as governor of the state through the judgment of the supreme court, as a precursor to the governor defecting to the APC.

The apex court would soon deliver judgment in the appeal filed by Yusuf.

In November, the court of appeal in Abuja affirmed the verdict of the Kano governorship election petition tribunal which sacked Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

In a statement on Sunday, Abdullahi Abbas, chair of the APC in Kano, said Tinubu believes in the rule of law and would not be part of any arrangement to subvert justice.

“The rumours had it that the NNPP has reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter in favour of the NNPP candidate to remain as governor and subsequently decamp to the APC,” Abbas said.

“There is nowhere such a meeting was held with either Mr President or any leader of the party.

“President Bola Tinubu is a democrat and strongly believes in the rule of law and the right thing to be done and therefore will not be part of any arrangement or reconciliation to subvert justice and support people who have stolen votes or breached the electoral act to emerge as leaders.”

The chair said there is no tension in Kano as the people are happy with the verdicts of the tribunal and appeal court sacking Yusuf.

“Kano is very peaceful and the people are conducting their normal businesses despite all efforts by the NNPP to provoke and incite youth to create unnecessary political crises in the state,” he said.

Earlier in the month, leaders of both parties signed a fresh peace accord ahead of the supreme court verdict.
