Kano APC, Kwankwaso bicker over method of sharing FG’s palliatives for poor households

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano and Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), have locked horns over the method used to share palliatives for poor households in the state.

Barau Jibrin, deputy president of the senate, leads the federal government committee for the distribution of rice in Kano.

In a post on X on Monday, Kwankwaso expressed anger that the aid meant for Kano was handed over to APC members to share.

For the last one week I have been in Kano, and sadly I noted with great disappointment the Federal Government distribution of rice palliative to 35 states all through their Governors, except Kano State in the whole federation.

The former governor of Kano described it as “driving partisanship too far”.

“For the last one week I have been in Kano, and sadly I noted with great disappointment the Federal Government distribution of rice palliative to 35 states all through their Governors, except Kano State in the whole federation,” he said.

“Kano’s share was handed over to APC stalwarts to handle. This is a gross insult to our constitutional democracy and driving partisanship too far.

“I call on Mr. President to immediately halt this naked derailment of democracy.”

But in a statement on Tuesday, Abdullahi Abbas, chair of the APC in Kano said the federal government is committed to reducing hunger in the country, but the NNPP government in the state is frustrating its efforts.

He faulted Kwankwaso for saying that the distribution exercise was solely left for the APC, adding that the NNPP, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) had representatives on the committee.

“The bipartisan committee worked out detailed modalities for the distribution of the palliatives to prevent incidences of diversion and ensure that the beneficiaries are truly the most needy members of the public,” the chair said.
