The Kano government has announced the extension of the lockdown in the state by one week.
Muhammad Garba, the state commissioner for information, made the announcement in a statement on Monday night.
According to him, the decision was reached after consultations with the federal government and key stakeholders in the health sector.
He said the measure is aimed at further reducing indiscriminate person-to-person contact, which is considered as one of the major ways COVID-19 is spread.

Garba, while acknowledging the impact of the lockdown on the public, called for patience and support as the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
He also asked residents to continue to observe strict personal hygiene through regular hand washing, use of face masks and social distancing.
On April 27, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a two-week lockdown in Kano as part of efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

As of May 11, Kano has recorded 666 COVID-19 cases, out of which 63 people have recovered with 32 fatalities recorded.
