The Kano State Fire Service says three people, including a father and his son, have died after they fell into a pit latrine while retrieving a phone.
Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesperson of the service, said Danjuma, a 60-year-old man, his son Ibrahim, Aminu Gaye, and one Alhassan, fell into the pit toilet.
Abdullahi said only Alhassan survived the incident while others were unconscious when they were retrieved from the toilet.
“We received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station at about 11:00 a.m. from one Aminu Yar’gwanda that four men had been trapped inside a pit toilet,” NAN quoted the spokesperson as saying on Sunday.

“We immediately sent our rescue team to the scene at about 11:15 a.m. Danjuma was trying to retrieve a phone that fell into the pit toilet when he got trapped.
“Thereafter, his son entered the pit toilet to save his father and also got trapped.
“Gaye and Alhassan also entered to rescue both men, but they also got trapped. The first three victims were rescued unconscious, while the fourth victim was rescued alive.”

Abdullahi said three victims were confirmed dead at the Bichi Special Hospital.
