The Kano government has reacted to the murder of travelling hunters intercepted by members of a vigilante group in Edo state.

On Thursday, a mob in the Uromi area of Edo killed at least 16 hunters of northern descent who were travelling from Elele, Rivers state.

The Kano-bound travellers were attacked and lynched after some vigilante members raised the alarm, suspecting that they were kidnappers.

President Bola Tinubu subsequently ordered the police and security agencies to swiftly investigate and bring the suspects to justice.

In a statement by Ibrahim Waiya, Kano commissioner of information and internal affairs, the state government condemned the “heinous act” and demanded a firm response from security and judicial institutions.

Waiya said the incident highlights the “alarming increase in extrajudicial killings” across Nigeria.

“All individuals found to be complicit in this atrocity must be brought to justice, including any law enforcement personnel who may have neglected their duty,” the statement reads.

“Nigerian authorities are reminded of their unequivocal obligation under international law to protect the rights and lives of all citizens, ensuring that no act of violence or torture goes unpunished.

“We urge President Bola Tinubu and Governor Monday Okpebholo to denounce this act unequivocally and to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to justice by ensuring that the perpetrators are swiftly prosecuted through a fair and impartial trial.

“The Uromi tragedy, sadly, is not an isolated event but part of a broader and alarming trend of vigilante violence across the nation.

“This culture of impunity can only be countered by decisive action—both punitive and preventive—to reestablish the rule of law.”

Reiterating the need for human rights protection, the state government also demanded measures to prevent any recurrence of such violence.
