Kano government: Metal debris from construction site hit journalist — not stray bullet

The Kano government says Naziru Yau, a journalist with Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV), was hit by metal debris from a construction site at the state house.

Yau was reportedly hit by a stray bullet inside the Kano government house on Friday.

He was said to have been immediately rushed to the government house clinic for treatment.

The medical personnel at the clinic were reported to have said that the journalist was lucky because the bullet was not shot at close range.

The journalist was subsequently discharged after the injury was treated.

However, in a statement on Saturday, Sanusi Bature, media aide to the governor of Kano, said Yau sustained injuries from metal debris from an ongoing construction site at the government house.

Bature said the journalists’ lives are not under threat at the Kano government house.

“For clarity purpose, Naziru Yau, the reporter of the state television station was not hit by any stray bullet,” the media aide said.

“Instead, he sustained injuries from the metal debris emanating from an ongoing construction at the Kano state government house, an area that has been barricaded for caution.

“The truth of the incident emerged when medical professionals at the government house clinic disclosed the true nature of Mr. Naziru’s injuries.

“Let me emphasized the need for journalists to remain vigilant while carrying out their duties, especially in environments where construction activities pose potential hazards.
