Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano state, has handed over minors arraigned for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protest to their parents.

The minors were arrested and detained during the nationwide protest against high cost of living in Nigeria from August 1-10.

Their arrest sparked outrage after they were arraigned earlier this month, leading to their release.

The teenagers were said to have been undergoing rehabilitation since their release.

Speaking during the handing-over ceremony held at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialists Hospital, Giginyu, in Kano state, Yusuf commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the withdrawal of the charges against the minors.

Yusuf, represented by Shehu Sagagi, his chief of staff, advised the minors to utilise the state government’s support to achieve their educational goals.

He urged them to be law abiding and shun violent protests as the state government would not condone a repeat of such of the August incident.

Michael Banda, the officer-in-charge of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), thanked the governor for his efforts in protecting the rights and welfare of the minors.

He noted that UNICEF, in partnership with the state ministry of women affairs, children, and disabled persons, had provided relevant support for the minors to ensure their well-being, safety, and reintegration.

“The swift, coordinated actions of the Governor’s team and the quality of service provided by all partners involved set a commendable example of child-centered governance UNICEF Support through the Ministry and Social Workers,” Banda said.
