Kano to clear waterways to prevent flooding

The Kano state emergency management agency (KASEMA) says it will work with the ministry of environment to ensure all waterways are cleared to prevent flooding in the state.

Saleh Jili, executive secretary of the agency, said this at the state capital on Saturday.

“The agency is doing everything possible to collaborate with the state ministry for environment to ensure all major waterways are cleared, especially the dams,” he said.

According to Jili, the agency will also provide the needed support to protect lives and property from the impact of heavy rainfall.

He said the agency is carrying out awareness campaigns across the 44 LGAs of the state on precautionary measures against flood, windstorm and rainstorm.

“Radio and TV programmes are now in place to sensitise the public on the risk of flood and mosquito-related issues, so that people will be mindful of keeping their drainages clean.”

He advised residents  to clear waterways around them to prevent a repeat of the 2020 flooding experience in the state, which took four lives and destroyed over 5,000 houses.

The federal ministry of water resources had listed Kano as one of the 28 states that will be affected by severe flooding in 2021.

States have been advised to put in place proper mechanisms to confront the disaster when it occurs.
