The Kano state government has announced plans to digitalise markets across the state to track economic activities and boost revenue generation.

Shehu Sagagi, the state commissioner for commerce, investment, and industry, spoke during a meeting with the Emirate council committee on economic and social matters in Kano on Monday.

According to Sagagi, the digitalisation of Kano’s markets will enable the government to monitor financial activities more effectively and use the data for economic policy formulation.

“We will discuss the need to digitalise our markets so that the government can track economic transactions and know the exact amount of money circulating,” he said.

“This will help in policy formulation and economic planning.”

During the meeting, he said stakeholders had gathered to brainstorm strategies aimed at reviving industries and strengthening Kano’s competitive advantage in sectors such as garment production, textiles, and soap making.

Sagagi also stressed the importance of ensuring a reliable power supply to the newly established garment industries across all 44 local government areas in the state.

In addition, he discussed the need to reactivate the dormant Kano state committee on economy and investment.

Sagagi said the government would take steps to revive the committee so that it can drive economic reforms and improve public-private sector collaboration.

On his part, Shehu Muhammad, the Sarkin Shanun Kano, highlighted the committee’s role in providing advice to the government on economic matters.

Muhammad noted that Kano’s long-standing commerce and industry-driven economy requires modernisation to reduce dependence on external markets.

“Our people spend billions monthly travelling to Aba and Onitsha for textiles and soap, in spite of having the resources here in Kano,” he said.

Muhammad added that the commissioner is already addressing the challenges, and they expect to see significant progress in the coming weeks.
