Katsina, Sokoto assemblies elect APC’s Nasir Yahya, Tukur Bala as speakers

The Katsina house of assembly has elected Nasir Yahaya, a member representing Daura constituency, as its speaker.

NAN reports that Yahya of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was elected unanimously on Tuesday by members of the assembly.

The lawmakers also elected Abduljalal Runka, member representing Safana, as deputy speaker.

Shamsuddeen Dabai, representing Danja was elected majority leader, while Ibrahim Dikko of Matazu constituency is the new chief whip.

Other principal officers elected include Mustapha Ya’u of Jibia constituency as deputy majority leader and Salisu Hamza-Rimaye, representing Kinkia, as the new deputy chief whip.

Lawal Abdu, member representing Kankara constituency is the only opposition on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the APC-led eight assembly.

The Yahaya and his deputy were sworn in by Lawal Dan-Suleiman, the clerk of the house, while other members were inaugurated by the speaker.

Speaking with journalists after the inauguration, the speaker said he would ensure unity in the assembly and promised to make laws that would benefit the state.

Commenting on the new leadership, Bala Musawa, APC deputy chairman in Katsina, said the consensus voting was in the interest of all the party members.

Musawa thanked God for the successful inauguration, adding that he was confident of the support of all elected members for the new leadership.

Meanwhile, in Sokoto, Tukur Bala, a member representing Bodinga south, has been elected as the speaker of the house of assembly.

Kabiru Ibrahim who represents Kware emerged as the deputy speaker in an election conducted after the proclamation of the 10th assembly by Ahmad Aliyu, governor of the state.

The speaker and his deputy, elected unopposed, are members of the APC.
