Kidjo’s 3rd Grammy, Taylor Swift’s dig at Kanye West… Grammy 2016 highlights

The 58th edition of the Grammy award held at the Staples Centre, Los Angeles, on February 15 and lovers of music have been talking about the event.

Here are some interesting things that happened at the ceremony:

‘AFRICA IS JOYFUL’

These were the words of Angelique Kidjo, Beninese singer, as she received her third Grammy award.

Her album ‘Sings’ fetched her exactly the same award she won at the 57th  edition with her album Eve’.

In her acceptance speech, Kidjo said: “I want to dedicate this Grammy to all the traditional musicians in Africa, in my country, to all the young generation.

“Africa is on the rise, Africa is positive, Africa is joyful; let’s get together and be one with music, and say no to hate and violence.”

TAYLOR SWIFT’S DIG AT KANYE WEST

Tyalor Swift, American singer, won the album of the year award with her album ‘1989’, becoming the only female to win the award two times.

Her acceptance speech was a subtle dig at Kanye West, who took credit for Swift’s success in his new song Famous.

In her acceptance speech, the 26-year-old said: “As the first woman to win album of the year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.

“But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”

RIHANNA MISSED HER PERFORMANCE

Although she was at the venue of the event, Rihanna had to cancel her performance at the 2016 Grammys due to bronchitis.

The 27-year-old singer, who did not partake in Red Carpet because she had to rehearse backstage, cancelled her performance following the advice of a doctor.

She tweeted her apologies.

DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS

People are different and this will reflect in their reactions. This was no different for first-time Grammy awards winners.

“Can’t believe what happened. My dad whispered ‘You made it’ before I walked up and I lost it. I love my family so much. Without them I wouldn’t be here today. Thank you to my team and everyone who got me here. Gonna cry happy tears all night. AHHHHHH.”

Conversely,, it was a tame celebration for Justin Beiber, who shared a screenshot of a tweet in 2011 where he wished to win a Grammy.

To celebrate his victory, he wrote “Beliebers. We did it! I love you. Now get ready for the show. Not done yet. #GRAMMYs

BAD NIGHT FOR ADELE

Award-winning singer, Adele, did not have a stellar night as her performance of All I Ask was marred by technical issues.

Unfazed by the challenges, the songstress rendered the song with the grace and poise she is known for.

She posted on her Twitter page after the performance and explained the technical issue to fans. “The piano mics fell on to the piano strings, that’s what the guitar sound was. It made it sound out of tune.

“Because of it though… I’m treating myself to an in n out. So maybe it was worth it.”

VETERAN TRIO ‘UNIMPRESSED’

Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown and Ice Cube can be described as veterans in the music industry and the trio made their dislike for the 2016 Grammy Awards clear.

Snoop Dogg, American rapper who has been nominated for the Grammys 17 times without winning any, shared a caricature of himself smoking out of a Grammy on his Instagram page hours before the event began.

The caption read: “I’d rather blow some real smoke with my real loved ones and count the 17x I have been invited with the same results.”

Chris Brown shared a picture of himself brooding on his Instagram page with the caption: “How boring y’all think the Grammys gone be this year?”

Ice Cube, an American rapper, attended the event but left before the event was over.

In a video that surfaced online, he described the Grammys as a waste of time.
