Also reportedly freed are three females who were kidnapped along with the sisters.

Agatha Osarekhoe, superior-general of the convent, was quoted to have said the sisters returned to the convent unhurt.

It is not clear if any ransom was paid for their release.

TheCable was unable to reach the authorities on the development as Jimoh Moshood, spokesman of the Nigeria police force, did not answer his calls or reply the text message sent.

Efforts to reach the Edo police command also proved abortive.

The six of them were kidnapped by gunmen on November 14 from the convent located in Iguoriakhi, Edo.

Some Nigerians, including Alfred Martins, Archbishop of Lagos, had called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims.
