Kogi: We’ve resources to create state police, n’assembly should enact law

Jerry Omodara, the security adviser to the Kogi government, says the state has the resources to establish and manage state police.

On February 15, the federal government set up a committee to explore the creation of state police amid the growing insecurity in the country.

On Tuesday, a bill seeking to establish state police passed a second reading in the house of representatives.

The bill, sponsored by Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker of the house, and 14 others, proposes to transfer the term “police” in the 1999 constitution from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list.

The bill, which comprises 18 clauses, seeks to amend sections 34, 35, 39, 42, 84, 89, 129, 153, 197, 214, 215 and 216 of the constitution.

Reacting to the development in an interview with NAN, Omodara commended the talks about the creation of state police.

He said state police are necessary to address the security challenges facing the country.

He added that the national assembly has a great role to play in providing the legal framework for the establishment of state police in all the states.

Omodara said Ahmed Ododo, governor of Kogi, will continue to improve the security architecture of the state, adding that the state is safe for all residents.
