Lagos assembly appoints new principal officers after Obasa’s impeachment

The Lagos state house of assembly has announced new principal officers following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker.

Obasa, who represents Agege I, was unanimously removed from his position on January 13 amid allegations of misconduct.

The house also dissolved all principal positions and standing committees in the assembly.

Subsequently, Mojisola Meranda, former deputy speaker, was elected to lead the state assembly, while Fatai Adebola was elected as deputy speaker.

Presiding over the plenary on Friday, Meranda announced the appointments of Temitope Adedeji as majority leader, David Setonji as chief whip, Richard Kasumu retained his seat as deputy majority leader.

The members appointed are: Hon Temitope Adedeji (Ifako Ijaiye 1) as Majority Leader, Hon  David Setonji (Badagry 2) as Chief Whip, Hon. Richard Kasumu (Ikeja 2) as Deputy Majority Leader while Hon. Sanni Babatunde (Kosofe 1) as Deputy Chief Whip,” the speaker said.

Upon assuming office as speaker, Meranda met with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

She said the meeting was to provide an update on recent developments in the assembly and seek the council’s approval for the new appointments.
