Lagos guber: ADC candidate Doherty picks Giwa-Amu as running mate

Funso Doherty, governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, has picked Rosemary Giwa-Amu, a human rights activist, as his running mate in the 2023 election.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on Friday, Doherty said the mission of the party is to create a new paradigm of governance in the state.

“Lagos can be more than this. Is it that Lagos does not have money or industries or is it not collecting taxes? Is Lagos the poorest state in Nigeria?” he said.

“The answer to all of these questions is that Lagos has the industries. The budget for this year is N1.7 trillion, so why is it so?

“The conclusion is that those that were put in charge of these resources on behalf of the people have betrayed that trust.

“Enough is enough, we will enter this race as a party and as a candidate with the idea that we will bring a new paradigm of leadership. That’s the mission and that’s what you will continue to hear from us.”

On her part, Giwa-Amu said her selection as the deputy governorship candidate marks the beginning of a “huge opportunity” to contribute to the rebuilding of Lagos.

She said she would strive to work with her principal to restore Lagos to its full glory.

“I’m happy that the party and Funsho Doherty, the next governor of Lagos state, God willing, has considered me worthy of this job,” she said.

“Today is unarguably the most exciting moment of my sojourn in Lagos, where I have lived for the past 29 years. This marks the beginning of a massive opportunity in my life to demonstrate my long-term vision of greater involvement and the building of Lagos state.

“Lagos is under serious challenges, high-level insecurity, decay of critical infrastructure and absence of necessary social safety net.

“Therefore, this is a great opportunity for me to contribute to turning things around. We will work assiduously to restore the state to its full glory as a centre of excellence.”
