Lagos speaker: Ambode’s action will determine if he’ll be impeached

Mudashiru Obasa, speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly, says the action of Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of the state, will determine if he would be impeached.

According to NAN, Obasa said this at plenary while responding to reports on the plots to oust the governor.

The speaker reportedly said if the house arrives at the decision to remove Ambode, it would be done in the open but added that there was nothing of such at the moment.

“We are not embarking on any impeachment process against the governor now. If there would be an impeachment, it would be from the governor and if there would not be any need for impeachment, it would be from him, based on his actions,” he said.

“Even at that, impeachment is constitutional, so many speakers, senate presidents, presidents and others have been impeached all over the world.

“So, nobody can threaten us if it happens because we are representatives of the people. We don’t need the wailers to guide us in performing our duties. It is not out of place for us to do our job.”

According to him, the assembly has been working with the governor to ensure peace and development in the state.

The reports of the plot to remove Ambode thickened after Obasa directed private sector partnership (PSP) operators to resume refuse collection and disposal.

Ambode had disengaged the PSP operators last year following the introduction of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, through the Visionscape Sanitation Solution Limited.

But at plenary on Thursday, Obasa asked chairmen of all the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) of the state to mobilise PSP operators back to the streets.
