The Lagos state safety commission (LSSC) says it intends to introduce compulsory insurance to all buildings in the state.
Hakeem Dickson, director-general of LSSC, said this would be made possible with the assistance of the National Insurance Commission.
Speaking with journalists on the upcoming 9ja Safe Awards 2017, Dickson said consultants have been engaged to ensure that organisations conform to safety laws and regulations.
“The state government through the commission in order to ensure that all buildings are insured is about to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with representatives of NAICOM, this Wednesday,” he said.

“It is a pity that the Insurance Law of 2003 which had since been in existence has not been fully enforced except for the aspect which provides for compulsory insurance for motor vehicle.
“Unknown to many, the Law also provides compulsory insurance policy for owners of buildings, hospitals among others which are also as important if not more important than insuring a vehicle.
“The commission has also been reorganized and staff reassigned to ensure innovative approach and better delivery of service to the public.

“The commission spearheaded the injection of safety in the curriculum of all the Technical Colleges in the state and has also developed school safety and compliance manual.
“We have also engaged consultants who are qualified in different domains to assist us in ensuring that all organisations conform to lay down safety laws, regulations and measures in their day to day business.”
