The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says a driver who was evading arrest killed two persons, including a pregnant woman in the Ago Palace way of Mainland.

On Tuesday, a car rammed into a tricycle after a steering wheel tussle between a driver and a police officer in the area.

The accident claimed the life of a pregnant woman and the driver of the tricycle while two children who sustained injuries were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The incident sparked outrage and led to chaos in Ago.

A police officer was almost lynched by the mob before he was saved by a reinforcement.

Speaking on the accident, LASTMA, in a thread of posts on X,  said its operatives had arrested the driver for “driving in a direction prohibited by law”.

The agency added that according to Hassan Kehinde, the leader of its patrol team at the scene, the driver was handed over to a police officer who was to escort the car to the LASTMA office.

LASTMA said the driver then attempted to escape and collided with the tricycle.

“On their way, and in an attempt by the driver to escape, he diverted into Bayo Oyewale Street by Ago round-about and rammed into a fully loaded tricycle,” the LASTMA patrol officer was quoted as saying.

“While the tricycle operator died instantly, the pregnant woman later died at the Hospital while the 2 injured School Children were currently, under the Intensive Care Unit” receiving medical attention.”
