LASTMA officials ‘to wear body cameras’ for quick capture of traffic violations

Olajide Oduyoye, general manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), says its officials will soon start making use of body cameras to capture traffic violations.

Oduyoye said this on Friday when he featured on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.

He said Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state, will acquire the device, among others, for the agency.

“This year, we are going to be having body cameras on officers to capture incidences because things happen so fast,” he said.

“You can’t really say let me get my camera. But if you have your body camera on that is recording, then you can capture all sorts of different things that you can use against offenders.

“Those who willfully disobey traffic signs go in the middle of the night to remove those signs. When they are caught, they will say that there were no signs. They go and remove the signs to prove they aren’t aware of the signs. This happens all the time.”

He noted that some motorists, who want to willfully disobey traffic rules, remove traffic signs in the middle of the night.

Asked about the incident captured in a viral video on Thursday, wherein a driver knocked a police officer into a canal, he said the driver identified as Sunday Okodo has been charged to court for attempted murder and traffic violation.

The managing director said the affected police officer is alive and has been discharged from the hospital, adding that he needs local intervention to reset his fractured bones.
