LASU’s SSANU, NASU suspend strike

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the Lagos State University (LASU) have suspended their indefinite strike.

Both unions, under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), had embarked on industrial action on February 5, over outstanding arrears of minimum wage and other demands.

They had shut the university’s main gate and the senate building during the indefinite strike which affected exams.

But according to NAN, Moruf Sanni, the NASU chairman at LASU, confirmed on Tuesday that the strike has been suspended in honour of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos state governor.

Sanni said the suspension had followed a virtual meeting the branch had with the state government.

“We had a virtual meeting with the Lagos state government on Wednesday. It was led by the commissioner for establishments, and the government appealed to us to honour the governor by suspending the strike,” he said.

“After the suspension of the strike, we can come back to negotiate with the government concerning our issues or demands. We believe that the governor will do whatever he says.”

Commenting on the development, Zaenab Adams, LASU’s student union spokesperson, said students had yet to return to campus.

According to her, the LASU management would be meeting on Friday to discuss and announce a resumption date.
