Late Iranian general should have been killed years ago, says Trump

President Donald Trump says Qasem Soleimani should have been killed “many years ago” .

Soleimani, a top military commander in Iran, was killed in an airstrike at the Baghdad International Airport on Friday.

The Pentagon said the attack was carried out on the orders of Trump to deter “future Iranian attack plans”.

In a series of tweets on Friday, Trump said Soleimani was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans.

“Iran never won a war, but never lost a negotiation!,” he tweeted.

“General Qassem Soleimani has killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time, and was plotting to kill many more…but got caught!

“He was directly and indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number of PROTESTERS killed in Iran itself.

” While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country. They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago!

“The United States has paid Iraq Billions of Dollars a year, for many years. That is on top of all else we have done for them. The people of Iraq don’t want to be dominated & controlled by Iran, but ultimately, that is their choice.

” Over the last 15 years, Iran has gained more and more control over Iraq, and the people of Iraq are not happy with that. It will never end well!”

Meanwhile, international leaders have called for restraint and de-escalation of tension between the two countries.

Antonio Guterrers, secretary general of the United Nations, called on Trump to exercise restraint, saying the “world cannot afford another Gulf war”.

A statement by Farhan Haq, a spokesperson of Guterres, said the UN secretary general is deeply concerned by the recent rise in tensions in the Middle East.

“The secretary-general has consistently advocated for de-escalation in the Gulf,” Farhan Haq said.

“This is a moment in which leaders must exercise maximum restraint. The world cannot afford another war in the Gulf.”

The United Kingdom also urged the American president to step back from outright war with Iran.
