The pivotal moment in the game came just after the re-start, with substitute Steven Gerrard was rightly sent off after just 38 seconds for a nasty stamp on Herrera.

Daniel Sturridge reduced the tally for the Reds, but Wayne Rooney missed a penalty late as the Red Devils hung on for a precious win.

In the third game of the day, Aaron Lennon scored a late winner as Everton beat QPR 2-1 to move nine points clear of the relegation zone and deal a heavy blow to Rangers’ own hopes of survival.
Seamus Coleman’s cool finish put Everton ahead against the run of play in the first half before substitute Eduardo Vargas equalised for Rangers shortly after the hour.
The hosts’ quest for a winner was their undoing as Lennon provided a sucker-punch 13 minutes from time with his first goal for the Toffees to give Everton a much-needed victory that leaves Rangers four points adrift of safety.
