Senate President Ahmad Lawan says the screening of Abdulrasheed Bawa, President Muhammadu Buhari’s pick for chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), will be done in the open.

Lawan said this on Tuesday after he read a letter by the president asking the senate to confirm Bawa as the substantive chairman of the commission.

“The screening of the EFCC chairman designate will be done in plenary as is our tradition here,” the senate president said.

In the letter, the president based his request for confirmation on paragraph 2(3) of part1, CAP E1 of EFCC act 2004.

Bawa, who is 40 years old, is one of the pioneer EFCC cadet officers from 2005.

He is currently the Lagos zonal head of the anti-graft agency.

He will be taking over from Mohammed Umar who has been in acting capacity since July 2020 after the suspension of Ibrahim Magu over allegations of corruption.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics, and a master’s degree in international affairs and diplomacy.

The anti-graft agency has not had a substantive chairman for over four years. Magu was rejected by Bukola Saraki-led senate twice.
