Senate President Ahmad Lawan says the national assembly must work at ensuring that the lives and property of Nigerians are protected.
He said ”moments of silence” observed for Nigerians killed by criminals have become too frequent.
A moment of silence is observed as respect to anyone who have died.
Lawan spoke on Tuesday after a number of senators drew the attention of the red chamber to the killings recorded in the country in the past few days.

The killing of Ahmed Gulak, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, and some residents of Niger state was among the incidents mentioned.
Also, the upper legislative chamber observed a moment silence for Ibrahim Attahiru, the late chief of army staff, and 10 military officers who were killed in an air crash.
The senate president said the legislators need to step up their “legislative intervention” to ensure that citizens are protected.

“Let me observe that we have observed six minute silence and most of it was to pray for the repose of the souls of Nigerians who were murdered or killed by criminals,” he said.
“It is very important that we set up our legislative intervention in ensuring that we protect the lives and property of Nigerians to reduce the incidents of one-minute silence.
“I believe the senate and national assembly working together with the executive and getting the support of Nigerians, we can bring the much-needed succour to our people and that is why we are here.”
