Lawyer asks education minister to probe Adamawa poly council over ‘violation of institution’s laws’

Mohammed Aliyu, managing partner of Polaris Solicitors, has asked Olatunji Alausa, minister of education, to probe the activities of the governing council of Adamawa federal polytechnic in Mubi.

In a letter dated November 22 and addressed to Alausa, the lawyer said the governing council has allegedly violated laws that established the institution.

Aliyu, counsel to Mubi Concerned Citizens, said the meetings of the council led by Babagana Ajimi has been irregular.

President Bola Tinubu had appointed governing councils of various universities and polytechnics in May.

“The governing council is also statutorily required to meet only four times in a year, that is once in every quarter,” he said.

“As at the time of this petition, the council had met two times already within two months which is largely considered as abuse of office, and an avenue to drain the polytechnic’s resources through the payment of bogus allowances.”

Aliyu said the suspensions of the polytechnic’s bursar and registrar were not done in line with the rules.

“These two senior officers of the Polytechnic were suspended without being informed on the reasons why they were suspended,” he said.

“Our clients also informed us that the council chairman, without following duc process of the law and contrary to all procurement laws, has procured the services of two private companies to oversee the management of the polytechnic portal, and the provision of private security services to the polytechnic by a private guards’ outfit.

“The company engaged to manage the portal is to charge each student the sum of N5,000 only per session while the private Guards engaged are to be paid the sum of N100,000 per guard every month.”

The lawyer added that the alleged appointment of non-council and non-polytechnic staff is “capable of undermining peaceful cohesion in the polytechnic”.
