The Gombe government has approved N500,000 each as a subsidy for the 2024 intending pilgrims in the state.

In a statement on Friday, Ismaila Uba-Misilli, director-general of press affairs in Gombe, said the subsidy is to ease the financial burden on intending pilgrims due to the recent increase of hajj fares.

“Gov. Yahaya hopes that this intervention will contribute to a seamless and spiritually enriching hajj exercise for all pilgrims from Gombe State, as well as facilitate a conducive environment for religious activities despite prevailing economic challenges,” the statement reads.

About 1,373 intending pilgrims have been registered to perform the 2024 hajj exercise.

In March, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) asked intending pilgrims to pay an additional N1.9 million to the initial N4.9 million hajj fare.

The commission said the hajj fare adjustment was caused by the forex crisis in Nigeria.

Earlier, Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, approved a subsidy of N500,000 each for intending pilgrims in the state.
