Lions Club: We’re targeting 50 million Nigerians for eye treatment

Ademola Adesuyi, vice governor of District 404 B2 Lions club, Nigeria, says the club is planning to treat 50 million visually impaired people in Nigeria between 2018 and 2019.

Adesuyi said this while hosting Gudrun Yugvandottir, international president of the Lions club, in Abuja on Friday.

“In Abuja, we are just building the facilities to treat eye problems with corneal transplant our major target,” Adesuyi said.

“We are targeting 50 million Nigerians this year.”

He said building of capacity to have more eye experts was top on their agenda while eye screening and awareness campaigns will start in earnest.

Adesuyi also disclosed that the treatment facility which is located in Abuja will service all Nigerians and Africans.

Yugvandottir  said though, the clubs, have been treating eye problems over the years it decided to step up the service this year.

“We started treating eye diseases since the start of this club,” she said.

“Through our programmes, we have eradicated eye problems in Africa, South America, China and all over the world.”

With over 1.5 million members, Lions clubs are in more than 200 countries in the world.
