Mason Mount scored the only goal as Chelsea beat Liverpool, English Premier League (EPL) champions, on Thursday night at Anfield.
The loss at Anfield is Liverpool’s fifth consecutive defeat at their once-heralded fortress and the first time in the club’s history. The only goal the Reds have scored at Anfield in 2021 came from the penalty spot against Manchester City.
Liverpool had Fabinho back from a muscle injury while Alisson Becker, their goalkeeper, also started after missing the last game due to his father’s death.
Chelsea made the better attacking moves at the start and eventually scored a goal that was disallowed through Timo Werner on 26 minutes. The German forward who regained his place in attack latched onto a long ball and poked beyond Alisson before tapping into an unguarded net but the former RB Leipzig hitman was adjudged to have moved a fraction offside by VAR.

The visitors eventually took the lead on 42 minutes via a similar move and this time, it was Mason Mount who managed to evade Fabinho and planted a curling shot into the bottom corner for a 1-0 Chelsea lead.
It was the 17th goal the Reds have conceded at Anfield this season, one more than they had let in the whole of last season as they trailed at halftime.
Liverpool improved their attack at the beginning of the second period but it was Chelsea who came closer to doubling their advantage. Alisson saved Ben Chilwell’s poked shot at the near post while Hakim Ziyech’s rebound was hacked off the goal line by Andy Robertson.
Jürgen Klopp tried to re-jig attacking ideas, replacing Mohamed Salah with Diogo Jota but they could not find a way behind Chelsea’s deep defence line.

Werner unsettled Liverpool’s defence all game and he came close to scoring from an acute angle but was thwarted by Alisson who made himself big, while the home side finally had a shot on target through Roberto Firmino’s tame header on 85 minutes.
