Liverpool extend EPL lead despite frustrating draw against Everton

Mohammed Salah scores Liverpool's second goal in their 2-2 draw against Everton

James Tarkowski scored a last-gasp equaliser to ensure Everton grabbed a point in their ill-tempered 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the English Premier League (EPL) encounter at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

The England international defender snatched the headlines from Mohamed Salah, who scored one and assisted another, as Liverpool came within a few seconds of claiming all three points. Beto had scored the opener for the hosts.

In the final Merseyside derby to be hosted at Goodison Park, Everton took the lead from a well-worked free-kick routine that set Beto free in the box, and the striker slotted the ball under Alisson Becker’s arm and into the net for 1-0 on 11 minutes.

The lead lasted only four minutes as Liverpool made it 1-1 when Alexis Mac Allister nodded home Salah’s cross into the bottom corner.

A feisty encounter soon unravelled with five yellow cards brandished and no real chances created again, and both sides went into the break level.

Everton continued to prove a stubborn side, creating decent chances to hurt Liverpool, but Arne Slot’s side struck against the run of play on 73 minutes. Salah pounced on a poor clearance to hit a volley into the net for 2-1 to the visitors with his 22nd league goal of the season.

However, there was time for a late twist deep into added time. In the eighth minute of added time, Tarkowski leathered a volley into the top corner to steal a point for David Moyes’ Everton.

More drama ensued after the final whistle between both players, leading to red cards for Everton’s Abdoulaye Dacoure and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones. Slot was also shown a red card for Liverpool.

Liverpool, unbeaten in 20 EPL matches, have 57 points from 24 matches, seven points ahead of second-placed Arsenal. Everton climbed above West Ham to 15th place with 27 points from 24 matches.
