Local bread bakers protest in Kano over ‘high cost of flour’

A group of protesters under the umbrella of the Association of Women Gurasa Bakers staged a protest in Kano on Friday against the rising cost of flour.

Gurasa is the name given to a kind of bread baked locally by women across northern Nigeria.

Speaking with reporters during the protest that took place at Jakara in Dala LGA of Kano, Fatima Auwalu Yar-Gurasa, leader of the association, appealed to President Bola Tinubu and relevant stakeholders to expedite action in providing succour by reviewing the high cost of flour.

Yar-Gurasa said the high cost of the commodity has become a setback for members of the association, noting that 50kg of flour is currently sold at N40,000 as against N17,000 a few months ago.

“Most of us are widows, we depend on this business to cater for the needs of our children, but this hike in the commodity is putting our lives in jeopardy because we solely depend on the business,” NAN quoted Yar-Gurasa as saying.

“We are calling on President Tinubu and relevant stakeholders to come to our aid and reduce the price for our business to succeed.

Yar-Gurasa warned that the continuous rise in the price of flour may for many of them out of the business.

“Quitting the business will not do well for society because we will not have the means of taking care of our children, and this will lead to an increase in crime and other social vices,” she added.

“Let me use this opportunity to call on Abdussamad Isyaku Rabiu and other stakeholders to reverse the price of flour quickly, or we shut down our businesses.

“If we shut down, it will not affect us alone; it will affect many people in this state and the north as a whole. We call on the stakeholders to do the needful to control the situation because it is rather deteriorating.”
