LP begins reconciliation moves with its members in n’assembly

House of reps
The Labour Party (LP) has constituted a three-man intervention and truce committee to resolve lingering issues between the party and its members in the national assembly.

The committee, inaugurated on Monday at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, is part of ongoing efforts “to foster lasting harmony within the party”.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Obiora Ifoh, national publicity secretary of the party, announced that the committee is chaired by Ben Etanabene, with Mathew Nworgu and Chinedu Obika as members.

Julius Abure, national chairman of the LP, asked the committee to engage with the party’s legislators in the senate and the house of representatives to identify and resolve all differences.

He harped on the need for unity among the party’s 40 lawmakers, describing them as ambassadors of the party.

Abure expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver results within two weeks, urging them to work diligently to achieve lasting truce.

“We entrust you with this important assignment of bringing together all our members in the national assembly, both in the Senate and House of Representatives. This is for the purpose of bridging the gaps and resolving all issues that may have existed,” Abure said.

“There is need for all our members, about 40 of you, to be on the same page with the party leadership. You are our ambassadors at the national assembly and we are proud of some of you and the values you have exhibited. But we think there are still some gaps that needed to be plugged, hence the urgency for this assignment.

“We can assure you that the party will do all it can to ensure that enduring truce is achieved within the party and particularly with a key stakeholder such as the NASS caucus.”

In his response, Etanabene, chairman of the committee, pledged the commitment of the members to take the assignment seriously and work towards resolving the issues.

The move comes amid recent defections of some LP lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recently, four members of the house of representatives, including Chinedu Okere (Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West), Mathew Donatus (Kaura), Akiba Bassey (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani), and Esosa Iyawe (Oredo) cited the internal crisis in the party as their reason for defecting.

The committee’s work is expected to address these grievances and prevent further defections, ensuring the party remains united and focused on its goals.
