LP not considering merger with any party, says Obiora Ifoh

Obiora Ifoh, spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP), says the party is not considering a merger but is open to a partnership for future elections.

Ifoh is reacting to a call by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the rebranding and possible merger or coalition of the Labour Party.

In a communique issued after its meeting during the weekend, the congress directed the national administrative council (NAC) to “take immediate steps, which may include rebranding, merger, or forming coalitions to defend the interests of NLC and Nigerian workers in the party with a view to reclaiming the party and returning it to its original ideological roots”.

“The congress will not allow the Labour Party to be hijacked by reactionary forces who do not represent the aspirations of the working people and broader Nigerian people,” the communique reads.

“The NLC remains committed to ensuring that the party remains a true vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and the oppressed masses.”

However, in a statement issued on Monday, Ifoh said the LP “remains open to collaborations aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections”.

The LP is entangled in a leadership crisis which has splintered the party into factions.
