It’s been confirmed! Oscar-winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o will not only produce the movie adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s novel, Americanah, she will also star in it.
The movie will be made by Plan B, owned by award-winning American actor, Brad Pitt, and producers of 12 Years a Slave, which won Nyong’o an Oscar in February.
Americanah centres on two Nigerians who fall in love, but find themselves separated by immigration issues.
An elated Nyong’o spoke of the “honour” of bringing “Ms. Adichie’s brilliant book to the screen”.

On her Instagram page on Friday, June 6, Nyong’o also confirmed news of having acquired the film rights for Americanah . Posting a picture which read “AMERICANAH A NOVEL CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE”, she said@ “Yes!!! Tis true: I acquired the rights to make a film of this amazing book by this amazing writer. I HIGHLY recommend the read. #Americanah #GrabIt”
This is coming after Adichie confirmed that she had sold the film rights to her novel, Americanah to Nyong’o at a Stylist Book Club Inaugural Session in London on May 29,2014.
Americanah, which follows lovers Ifemelu and Obinze, won the prestigious US National Book Critics Circle Award in 2013.

It was selected as one of the 10 best books of the year by the New York Times Book Review, the BBC and Newsday.
It was also on the shortlist for this week’s Baileys Prize for Women’s Fiction in the UK, but lost out to Eimear McBride’s’ A Girl Is A Half-Formed Thing.
Adichie’s award-winning novels include Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun, which was recently made into a film starring Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
