Mame Diouf’s mother killed in September Hajj crush

The mother of Stoke City forward Mame Diouf is understood to have died in a stampede during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in September.

The crush in Mina, near Mecca, happened as two large groups of pilgrims converged as they were taking part in one of the Hajj’s major rites.

Foreign media and officials put the death toll from the crush at more than 1,000 while Saudi authorities put the figure at 769.

However, Stoke extended “sincere condolences” to the player.

“Stoke City wish to extend sincere condolences to Mame Diouf following the tragic death of his mother,” a statement in the club’s website read.

“The Club will provide Mame with all the support he needs at this extremely difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends.”

The former Manchester United striker and Senegal forward joined Stoke on a free transfer when his Hannover contract expired in July 2014.
