Man remanded for ‘extorting mother-in-law over marriage to Buhari’

A magistrate court sitting in Minna, Niger state, has sentenced a man to 12 months imprisonment for extorting his mother-in-law.

The man had reached an agreement with his mother-in-law to marry her off to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The man, identified as Gambo Adamu, was said to have extorted his mother-in-law, Sa’adatu Aliyu, to the tune of N5 million.

According to DailyTrust, the defendant had promised to link his mother-in-law up with the former president.

Sa’adatu who is a divorcee, told the court that her son-in-law gave her the sum of N100,000 as the bride price from the former president.

She said he also presented fried chicken in a bag and a basket of kolanuts as gifts from Buhari during the wedding Fatiha ceremony.

She said the defendant had also approached her with the idea of setting up a non-governmental organisation (NGO) where she would be the founder and he would serve as spokesperson of the establishment.

The plaintiff further said her son-in-law explained that the NGO would bring a lot of benefits from the federal and state governments and would also be allocated a slot to perform hajj.

Sa’adatu added that she headed to court after she was left stranded by the former president who was to pick her up as his bride after the wedding.

Ibrahim Zago, the presiding judge, sentenced the defendant to 12 months imprisonment for “cheating”.

Zago said the offence contradicts section 322 of the penal code with an option of N100,000 fine.

The judge asked the defendant to pay the sum of N2 million in compensation to the complainant.
