A high court in Ondo state has sentenced Saidu Adeyemi to death for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Adenike Oluboyo.

The body of Oluboyo, who was the daughter of Lasisi Oluboyo, former deputy governor of the state, was found at the residence of Adeyemi in July 2018.

Oluboyo was a final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.

After killing the deceased, Adeyemi buried her in a shallow grave in his room for five days but was exposed by his father who reported the case to the state’s police command.

Subsequently, Adeyemi was charged to court and arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

During the trial, the defendant claimed that he was not the killer of the deceased. He said she brought two boys into his room, who eventually killed her.

He said he was asked to bring a digger and a shovel to dig the floor of his room and bury her while claiming that he was warned not to tell anybody, or else, he would be killed.

Olumuyiwa Pelemo, one of the witnesses and a pathologist, told the court that the result of the autopsy conducted on the deceased showed Adenike had several injuries on her body which led to her death.

The pathologist added that there was “an abnormal shaving of the hair on the deceased’s head and the pubic region.”

Another witness, a brother of the defendant, also testified that the family got wind of the killing when the convict confessed to him that he killed and buried her in his room.

The witness said the defendant begged him to get a sack for him to dispose the corpse, but he reported to their father.

Delivering his judgment, Samuel Bola, the judge, said it was established, through the autopsy report, that the deceased did not die a natural death.

He noted that the court did not believe the defendant’s claim that two men killed Adenike, adding that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that Adenike was intentionally killed by the defendant.

He, therefore, sentenced Adeyemi to death by hanging.

“You, Seidu Adeyemi, are hereby sentenced to death by hanging. May God have mercy on your soul,” he ruled.

Adekola Olawoye, the state attorney-general and commissioner for justice, commended the judgment, saying it was a victory for the rule of law.
