Man sets wife ablaze for ‘washing his clothes instead of cooking for him’ in Ogun

The police command in Ogun says its operatives have arrested one Hassan Azeez for setting his wife ablaze over her alleged refusal to cook for him.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, Ogun police spokesperson, in a statement on Friday, said the victim’s father reported the case on October 22, 2022.

Oyeyemi said the suspect escaped after police officers were deployed to arrest him at the scene of the incident.

The police spokesperson, however, said Azeez was arrested on January 22, 2023.

Explaining the incident to the police, the suspect said his wife, a mother of one, refused to prepare food for him because she was washing clothes.

“On interrogation, the suspect who claimed to have run away to the Benin Republic confessed to the commission of the crime but blamed it on the devil,” the Ogun police spokesperson said.

“According to him, he asked the victim to prepare food for him, but instead of the victim to prepare his food, she was busy washing clothes.

“He stated further that he got annoyed because he was hungry and the annoyance made him to petrol on her and set her on fire.

“When asked whose clothes the woman was washing, he confessed that it was his clothes.”

It is not clear if the woman survived the incident but the case has been transferred to the homicide section of the state criminal investigation department.
