Man using wife’s gown to impersonate lawyers sentenced to jail

An Abeokuta magistrate’s court in Ogun state has sentenced one Omotola Ayokanmi, a 47-year-old man to three years in prison for impersonation.

According to Fortune Akhenegor, a police inspector and the prosecution counsel, Ayokanmi unlawfully presented himself as legal practitioner at a federal high court, Abeokuta, July 16.

Ayokanmi had appeared before the federal high court as a counsel to move an application for bail.

“The judge found fault in his address to the court which made the judge interrogate him,” Akhenegor said.

“He later confessed that he only had a diploma in law and had never been called to the bar. He confessed that he had been using his wife‘s gown who was called to bar in 2006, but not practising. The defendant has been practising since 2007.”

Akhenegor said the offence contravened section 484 of the criminal laws of Ogun, 2006.

Folake Ogundele, the presiding magistrate, sentenced Ayokanmi to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of preferred against him.
