Many feared dead as trailer crashes into bus at Abia police checkpoint

An unspecified number of passengers has been reportedly killed in a road accident involving a trailer at a police checkpoint in the Lokpanta area of Abia state.

The incident was said to have occurred in the early hours of Thursday.

Witnesses said the trailer lost control while approaching the police checkpoint and crashed into an 18-seater bus.

The bus was parked at the checkpoint and awaiting clearance from the police operatives.

Maureen Chinaka, the police spokesperson in Abia, confirmed the incident in a telephone call with TheCable.

Chinaka said an investigation has commenced on the accident.

The police spokesperson said the outcome of the investigation would be made public, adding that the driver of the truck is already in custody for interrogation.
